Program and Exhibit of Botanical Quilts

Last Update: 15 June 2004

Members of the Monterey Garden Club are busily planning the bi-annual garden tour to be held the weekend of July 10-11. An important event of the weekend will be a botanical quilt show to be held at The Highland Center. Quilters and people who have family quilts are encouraged to share them during this time.

What is a botanical quilt? According to Cris Elliott, one of the organizers of the show, “a botanical quilt is one with a botanical theme – such as maple leaf, pine tree, flower baskets, or Rose of Sharon – as oppposed to a quilt with flowered material.” She says that quilts can be any size – bed, wall hanging, or mini – and any style – patchwork, applique, embroidered, or stencil.

How do you get those great big things to hang safely on a wall? The key is to attach a sleeve to the back of a quilt so it can be hung on a rack. Anyone wanting to enter a quilt in the exhibit can download an entry form in Adobe pdf format [59 Kb] or pick up a form at the Highland Public Library, or e-mail or call Cris Elliott at 540-468-3148. You may also want to see the poster for this event. [128 Kb]

If you are unable to attend the workshop and have a quilt for the show, please contact Cris. If you can’t sew your own sleeve on a quilt, Cris can also help you find someone who can do it for you.

Not really a quilt, this is a bedspread depicting an iris. It demonstrates the “botanical theme” and could be turned into a quilt.
